Types of Hearing Aids

TRADITIONAL (Analog) hearing aids are quality hearing aids, they just have fewer options than their technologically advanced friends. They come with a variety of circuits to meet each individual's hearing needs. They have one or two controls for the dispenser to make adjustments and a volume wheel for the patient to manipulate. They perform well in quiet environments but may not always perform satisfactorily in the presence of noise.

DIGITAL hearing aids are the most advanced technology available today. Digital Sound Processing (DSP) is used to replicate the sound instead of an analog signal. This allows for a clearer sound and many more programming options. These hearing aids provide the most accurate fitting due to multiple bands for adjustment and advanced computer software programs. Dual microphones are available on several styles to allow for better hearing in the presence of noise. We recommend these hearing aids for people with very active lifestyles and those who desire the most advanced technology.

Hearing Aid Styles

Completely-in-the-canal (CIC)

CICs are the smallest type of hearing aid and are almost invisible in the ear. All components are housed in a small case that fits entirely into the ear canal. This takes advantage of the ear's own natural sound  collecting design and offers improved telephone usage. CICs are restricted to persons with ear canals large enough to accommodate the insertion depth of the instrument into the ear. This type of hearing aid may not be suitable for persons with severe hearing loss.

In-the-Canal Hearing Instruments (ITC)

A bit larger than the CIC, the ITC hearing aids also fit far into the ear canal. Canal hearing aids use a slightly larger battery than the CIC style. This style is used for mild to moderate hearing losses.

In-the-Ear Hearing Instruments (ITE)

These hearing aids can be used for a wider range of hearing losses. Due to their size, ITEs can allow for larger sound amplifiers to provide more power, and more features such as a telephone amplifier. They are also much easier to handle.

Behind-the-Ear Hearing Instruments (BTE)

In BTE hearing aids, the electronics are housed in a case that fits behind the ear. Tubing and a custom-made ear mold direct the sound to the ear canal. BTE hearing aids can provide more amplification than smaller devices due to the stronger amplifier.
